Unherd reports: The surrender of Nikki Haley — long drawn-out but long expected — has set both of America’s major parties on the same course: a limp coronation, conducted through process of elimination. Donald Trump’s path is clear, competitors fallen away, while Joe Biden is also slipping through effectively unopposed, happily ignoring token challenges by Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson. But the frictionless progress of both candidates through their party’s internal processes is concealing a hidden truth about this year’s election. Many  Americans don’t want Joe Biden or Donald Trump. They see the race as a horror-reality show featuring two geriatrics who seem doddery, unwell, and angry at being told so. It is increasingly possible that they support independent candidates who could deprive both Trump and Biden of the votes needed to win the presidency. America could end up with a hung presidential election. How would this come about? The Constitution requires that a victorious president wins at least 270 Electoral College votes, which they must gather from some combination of the 50 states. It now looks possible that neither mainstream candidate will manage that. For a start, the “Never Trump” and “Never Biden” voters are on the rise. Americans are now keen to explore almost any alternative, and independents are offering one in the form of the “No Labels” movement as well as Robert Kennedy Jr’s campaign. Both have received relatively little coverage so far, partially because of the juggernaut status of the Democratic Party and the GOP, but also because third-party candidates rarely do well in American elections. But, given the staggering sense of frustration nationwide with Biden and Trump and the absence of a unifying figure, an independent candidate could have a historic opportunity. Las Vegas Review Journal reports: Nevadans could have an alternative to President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump in the November election. Independent presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced Tuesday that his campaign has collected the necessary signatures to be on Nevada’s general election ballot. The campaign collected more than 15,000 signatures in Nevada, about 5,000 more than the 10,095 signatures required, according to the campaign. The signatures are going to a facility in California to be organized, and a vendor will turn them in to Nevada’s counties by mid-April, said Randell Hynes, Nevada coordinator for the Kennedy campaign. The Hill reports:  Independent White House candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is accelerating his courtship of Black voters across the country, hoping to gain an edge with one of the most critical voting blocs to President Biden’s victory. Kennedy is pitching himself in Black churches, roundtables and among entertainers, believing he can build enthusiasm around a third option on November’s ballot. The groundwork has caught the attention of Black political and media figures, with some fearing that Kennedy will further cripple Biden’s White House prospects and others being admittedly more receptive, even intrigued, by his message.  “RFK Jr. is making the effort to have real conversations in Black spaces,” said Tim Black, an African American podcast host. “The important part is those spaces are ones where he can’t control the dialogue. The dialogue is spontaneous, thus not scripted. Authentic.” Kennedy’s flood-the-zone approach is a visible contrast from Biden’s, who has turned down many off-the-cuff interview opportunities this cycle as he tries to capture the same firm support from Black voters he enjoyed last election. The Carolina Journal reports: Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is still campaigning for president in the 2024 election, but he’s now running under the We The People political party in North Carolina, a move that could help get his name on the ballot this November. Formerly a Democrat turned unaffiliated, Kennedy is required to obtain the standard 83,000 signatures as an independent candidate in the state. But by affiliating with a political party, that requirement can be avoided. The newly-formed We The People party, created by RFK allies, could get him ballot access with only 13,865 signatures, WRAL first reported.  The We The People party has submitted a petition request form with the State Board of Elections to become a recognized political party. The petition must be signed by at least 200 registered voters from at least three separate congressional districts in the state. If the party meets the requirements by the end of May, Kennedy can secure his name on the ballot. “Mr. Kennedy will be on the ballot in North Carolina,” Stefanie Spear, press secretary for his campaign, affirmed to the Carolina Journal. “We are working to collect the 13,757 signatures needed to form the “We The People” party. The deadline to turn in these signatures is May 31.” Spear said the campaign is prepared with field teams, volunteers, legal teams, paid circulators, supporters, and strategists who are “ready to get the job done.” Read the full article here. New York Sun reports: With what could be the final legal effort for the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, to avoid extradition to America under way at London, attorney Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is demanding that Mr. Assange be pardoned and his presidential campaign is calling into question President Trump’s “sincerity” in questioning the “security state.” American officials have long maintained that Mr. Assange and WikiLeaks endangered Americans by publishing this classified information. Yet one prominent WikiLeaks user, intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, was released from prison by President Obama in the final days of his term, though she did not receive a presidential pardon. While Mr. Trump faced criticism for choosing not to pardon Mr. Assange, and President Biden has been silent on the topic as his Department of Justice pushes for extradition, Mr. Kennedy has demanded that Mr. Biden pardon Mr. Assange and has promised to do so in the unlikely event of his election. “Attacking the messenger is never good policy,” Mr. Kennedy said in a statement. “The government’s war against whistleblowers has turned heroes into criminals. UnHerd reports: Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has been performing unusually well for an independent presidential candidate, winning over a cross-section of voters that defies partisan demographic patterns.  The podcast Breaking Points ran a small focus group earlier this week on RFK supporters in the Detroit suburbs, and found that they were drawn by his charisma, independence and name, with some expecting him to carry on his family’s legacy and others believing he’d take the Kennedy name in a new direction. Participants in the small focus group were sceptical of the political establishment’s handling of Covid-19, though they all had different concerns, such as vaccine safety, corporate vaccine requirements and Covid treatment policies.  Read the full article here.
