Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports: Hundreds of people gathered Thursday at the Ko‘olau Ballrooms in Kaneohe to support Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s long-shot bid as an independent to become America’s next president. On Thursday, Kennedy’s more than hour-long speech began with a presentation of data from two months ago that showed only 18% of Americans under the age of 35 are proud of their country. “My primary job as president is to reinstill hope in that generation and pride in our country,” he said to a cheering crowd. Thursday’s rally started with videos about Kennedy’s background, including compilation clips from his other rallies around the country and images of him surfing in Hawaii. They were followed by Peter Kater, two-time Grammy-winning pianist, performing three songs. Politico reports: A growing number of Black voters are weighing options for 2024 other than the two major-party candidates — a serious problem for Joe Biden’s reelection campaign. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is trying to seize on that opening. The third-party presidential candidate — who recently defended his father’s decision to authorize the surveillance of Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s — spent last weekend campaigning in the heavily Black city of Atlanta. As African American leaders commemorated the civil rights icon at the King Center’s annual festivities, Kennedy hosted his own events to pitch himself to Black voters, playing up the Kennedy family’s reputation as allies of the Black community. Kennedy’s ability to sell himself to Black voters could be a key factor in 2024. In Georgia, Black voters make up about a quarter of the electorate and were critical to Biden’s winning coalition in a state decided by less than 12,000 votes. Kennedy said Atlanta was an “obvious” place to campaign over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. Kennedy Jr.’s rally at the Tabernacle in downtown Atlanta on Jan. 14. Kennedy is running for president as an independent in the upcoming election. “We’re always presented with two buttons to push our entire life. Being here feels like maybe there’s a third button. Maybe it does the same thing as those other two buttons, but let’s see what it does,” said Gerig, who voted blue in the two previous presidential elections. That feeling of pessimism about a perceived Democratic-Republican duopoly was shared by many young people attending Kennedy’s stump speech at the Tabernacle on Sunday. The rally was part of a petition drive to secure Kennedy a spot on Georgia’s ballot in November. It’s not just disaffected liberals who are curious about Kennedy’s third-party campaign. Former Trump voters are also taking notice. That describes Jonathan Strader, a 31-year-old veteran who lives in Marietta. Strader, who describes himself as a libertarian, grew up attending Tea Party rallies in South Carolina with his stepfather. Kennedy, Jr., who is running for president as an independent, announced on Tuesday that he had filed paperwork to create his own political party in six states — an effort to get his name on the ballot with fewer voter signatures than would be required for an unaffiliated candidate. Election offices in North Carolina and Hawaii confirmed that they had received the campaign’s applications for a new party, “We the People,” as did the Texas secretary of state’s office for the “Texas Independent Party.” Officials in California and Delaware did not respond to inquiries.
