Opinion: As President, I Will Stand With United Steelworkers

Newsweek reports: On December 18, 2023, Nippon Steel announced that they had reached an agreement with U.S. Steel management to acquire the 122-year-old steel maker and iconic symbol of American industrial strength for $55 a share or $14.9B. The United Steelworkers of America, who are affected most by this deal, were denied a seat at the table during negotiations with Nippon and are adamantly opposed to the sale. Because Nippon is a foreign company and the steel industry has importance for national security, the deal requires approval of the CFIUS (Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States) chaired by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. The sale has been met with bipartisan opposition. Those opposed include Republican Senators J.D. Vance, Marco Rubio, and Josh Hawley, as well as Democratic Senators Sherrod Brown, John Fetterman, and Joe Manchin. Due to pressure exerted by the Steelworkers, the White House has said "the deal merits serious scrutiny." I am opposed to the sale for a number of reasons. For starters, the board and management of U.S. Steel essentially auctioned off the company to the highest bidder for the sole purpose of aggrandizing shareholders equity at the expense of the Steelworkers. Second, the deal was struck behind closed doors without the participation of the United Steelworkers of America. This is a direct violation of the U.S. Steel-USW Basic Labor Agreement, which allows the union itself to bid for the company or assign their right to bid to another bidder. Finally, the Steelworkers union has expressed grave concern over the sale of a storied Industrial asset vital to national security. This should concern all Americans as well. RFK Jr. Praises Texas In Battle With Biden Over Border

The Hill reports: Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. on Thursday backed Texas in its ongoing battle with the federal government over border authority, criticizing the Biden administration for its handling of the U.S. southern border. “Texas is right. Biden’s failure to secure the border leaves states no choice but to take matters into their own hands,” Kennedy wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “As President, I will end this humanitarian crisis once and for all. I will secure the border and destroy the business model of the drug cartels. A country without borders is not a country at all.” Read the full article here. I’m inspired by how enthusiastic people are to collect signatures, create new political parties, and rally for real change,” Kennedy said in a statement Tuesday evening during the end of the New Hampshire primary. “This kind of energy is what will get us onto the ballot in every state and fuel our voter registration and GOTV operation as we head toward Election Day,” he said. The Un-American Disenfranchisement of RFK Jr. Voters

The Hill reports: Every election cycle, we hear Democrats and Republicans complaining about “disenfranchised voters.” We have been told incessantly for years and decades that “every voter should be heard.” That is correct. Except, it seems, when those votes may benefit a populist independent candidate, who, counterintuitively, is gaining in popularity while being ignored or smeared by much of the mainstream media, as well as the two major political parties. That candidate being Robert F. Kennedy Jr. It is fair to say that millions of Americans now support Kennedy for president. Just on X — formerly Twitter — he has 2.6 million followers and growing. Logic and basic math tell us his support would be much higher than those willing to take the time to sign up for X. Do those voters — from every political ideology, color, faith and sexual orientation — have the right to be heard? Should they be allowed to vote for the candidate of their choice? Hundreds Turn Out in Kaneohe To Support RFK Jr.’s Bid for Presidency

Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports: Hundreds of people gathered Thursday at the Ko‘olau Ballrooms in Kaneohe to support Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s long-shot bid as an independent to become America’s next president. On Thursday, Kennedy’s more than hour-long speech began with a presentation of data from two months ago that showed only 18% of Americans under the age of 35 are proud of their country. “My primary job as president is to reinstill hope in that generation and pride in our country,” he said to a cheering crowd. Thursday’s rally started with videos about Kennedy’s background, including compilation clips from his other rallies around the country and images of him surfing in Hawaii. They were followed by Peter Kater, two-time Grammy-winning pianist, performing three songs. Kamaile Puaoi and her son performed an oli chant, and Elijah McShane performed a prayer and a speech to support Kennedy in bringing “his mana to Hawaii.” Sheldon Doney, a Pearl City resident, attended the rally with his wife while both wore “Hawaii for Kennedy” pins on their shirts. “We are looking for leaders that are outspoken, that aren’t calling for coercion,” Doney said. “We really value his take on civil liberties and human rights.” Read the full article here.
